Why we think this is right

Premier Guitar Rig Rundowns and Guitar World interviews consistently document Mike McCready's Vitalogy-era voice as a vintage Fender Stratocaster into a blend of a Fender Bassman (clean/edge-of-breakup) and an old Marshall Super Lead Plexi for the bigger, driven parts. 'Better Man' follows that template: a chiming clean Strat figure in the intro/verse and a fuller overdriven tone in the chorus and outro solo. The main honest ambiguity is the exact guitar on this specific take (a Strat is most likely, though McCready also tracked Les Pauls on Vitalogy) and which amp carried each section; the era rig and clean-to-driven archetype are well established.
